Fun Fact: Knocker-Uppers

Knocker Uppers

Before alarm clocks, people would pay someone to knock on their window and wake them up. They were called knocker-uppers.

Knocker-uppers were a profession that existed in Britain, Ireland, and the Netherlands during and after the Industrial Revolution. They were needed to wake people up for work because fewer people woke up to the sound of church bells or roosters, and many laborers couldn't afford to lose work.

Knocker-uppers used a variety of tools to wake people up, including long sticks, soft hammers, rattles, and pea shooters. They would tap on windows with their sticks or knock on doors with their hammers.
